DONATE TO BBBST

Dear Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle Community,

Thank you for the warm welcome you have extended to me as I begin this new journey with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle. I am grateful for the chance to serve with you in this community of dedicated volunteers, donors, partners, families, and friends who believe deeply in the power of mentorship.

As we prepare for the new school year, we are strengthening our staff, expanding our outreach, and thoughtfully creating new matches between Bigs and Littles. Every new match represents the beginning of a meaningful relationship and the possibility of a brighter future for a young person in our community.

This season, we are focusing on “A New Journey with Big Dreams and Bigger Possibilities!”

And we need you.

We invite you to join us as we realize those bigger possibilities and look toward the future with renewed energy, bold vision, and an unwavering commitment to helping young people realize their full potential.

Over the next 30 days, our goal is to welcome 30 new monthly donors. Your recurring gift—at any level—provides dependable support that helps us recruit and train mentors, support our matches, and serve more children throughout the Triangle.

Together we can do BIG and AUDACIOUS things. Donate, volunteer, or share our mission with someone who believes in the potential of young people and attend or sponsor our Big Night Ball (more information about that annual event is below).

With your help, we can turn big dreams into even bigger possibilities.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to meeting this wonderful community in person to hear about your connection to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle and explore how we can build bigger possibilities together.

With gratitude,

Sheldon Mitchell
Chief Executive Officer

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle Announces New Chief Executive Officer

By |June 1st, 2026|

Experienced Nonprofit Leader to Begin Role May 11, 2026

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle is proud to announce the appointment of Sheldon Mitchell as its next Chief Executive Officer, effective May 11, 2026.

Following a thoughtful and comprehensive search process, the Board of Directors unanimously selected Sheldon to lead the organization into its next chapter of growth, impact, and community engagement.

Sheldon brings more than 20 years of executive leadership experience in mission-driven nonprofit organizations, with a proven track record in youth development, community partnerships, organizational growth, and sustainable fundraising leadership. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his collaborative leadership style, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to strengthening communities and expanding opportunities for young people.

Most recently, Sheldon served as Executive Director of Urban Ministries of Durham, where he led a $4 million-plus organization providing critical services including shelter, food access, workforce development, and recovery programs. During his tenure, he strengthened the organization’s financial sustainability, secured significant new funding opportunities, expanded donor and community partnerships, and successfully guided the organization through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with resilience and innovation.

Earlier in his career, Sheldon held leadership positions with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, Miracle Hill Ministries, and the Dayton Urban League. He also brings a particularly meaningful connection to the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters through his previous experience within the Big Brothers Big Sisters network as a Program Director—offering both strategic leadership expertise and firsthand understanding of the transformational power of mentorship.

“Sheldon’s leadership experience, integrity, and passion for serving youth and families made him the clear choice to lead Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle into the future,” said Roger Perry, Board President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle. “We are excited for our community, partners, donors, volunteers, and Littles to experience his vision and commitment to creating lasting impact.”

“I am honored to join Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle and look forward to a future where every young person in the Triangle has a mentor,” said Sheldon Mitchell. “Mentorship has the power to transform futures, strengthen families, and build thriving communities. I’m thrilled to be partnering with our staff, board, volunteers, donors, and community leaders to expand our impact and ensure more young people have access to caring mentors and meaningful opportunities.” We are building brighter futures—one relationship at a time.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle: For 25 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle (BBBST), a 501(c)(3)nonprofit, has been Eastern North Carolina’s premier mentoring organization, defending the potential of the future leaders of our community by matching youth (Littles) with committed adult mentors (Bigs). Each time BBBST pairs a child with a role model, we start something incredible: a one-to-one relationship built on trust and friendship that can blossom into a future of unlimited potential. We believe that all youth have the ability to overcome obstacles, and we advocate for them to explore the endless possibilities of what they can accomplish. We create mentoring relationships that ignite the power, promise of youth, and develop a village of support that helps maximize the likelihood that a Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship will thrive.
